November 2005 Quiz Night - a great success

The APSA 2005 quiz evening was a great success when parents, staff and governors all came together for a battle of wits and general (very general!) knowledge.

The quiz was won by a table of parents (see left) who took home some bottles of wine and chocolates…and the congratulations of all. For more Quiz Night pictures click here>>

An interval game of Heads and Tails was won by MFL teacher Camilla Smith who correctly guessed the toss of the coin in each round and took home first prize.

Many thanks to Anne Robbins and Manuela Garofoli who organised and ran the event and sold the tickets, and the great team of helpers who set up the hall and provided bread cheese and other goodies for hungry participants. The questions were set by Bob Saunders and he and Jan Smith counted the scores and supervised the marking on the night – many thanks to them too.

The quiz raised over £1000 for APSA funds – these are used to support the school to provide the best for our children.

If you would like a flavour of the questions, click here have a look at the picture quiz. How many could YOU identify? You'll also find the Quiz Night Picture Gallery here>>

A letter of thanks from Jacky and Jo

Dear All

Wasn’t it hot! What a scorcher! Far too hot to be outside all day being busy, so thank you to everyone who turned up to work or to spend lots of money. We have a running total of £4,200 which we hope will continue to rise. This was up £600 on last year. Below is a list of what each stall took, we haven’t had a chance to deduct all the expenses from individual stalls yet but the overall total is accurate. We have to say BIG thank yous to all those who braved the heat to run stalls and games. The bands and the choir were fabulous, thank you to the music department staff for all their hard work which helped to create a lively atmosphere. The music was much appreciated by people on the allotments next door! The auction was very entertaining and very profitable. Next year parents, we want to see more of you out there bidding against each other! Fabulous bar, the Pimms went down a treat and was much needed to rehydrate flagging stall holder and fair goers alike. If you enjoyed your Scalelextric race perhaps you might like to think of joining the Scalelextric Club which runs a Saturday afternoon session, please ring 0208 888 1817 for more details. The hook-a-duck proved popular – mainly for cooling down feet! But the plaster moulds were a big draw for the smaller children, and their parents could sit quietly in the shade! The BBQ did a roaring trade and the sausages were sizzling, thanks to all those on the stall who coped with even more heat! The International Food was delicious and so graciously served, hopefully next year we might get more of it! Amazingly this year the ice creams didn’t go like hot cakes! Maybe it was too hot?!?!? Thanks to the sterling work of our vendors we none-the-less made a tidy sum. The Y8 Cake Kingdom proved as popular as ever. Will it be Y9 Cake Kingdom next year? We do hope so. The book stall was a shady oasis with a dedicated team of sellers. The other shady area belonged to the Wheel of Fortune! Amazing things were done at the video and cd stall, there didn’t seem to be a lot of stock but big money was taken in! The two tombolas, gift and bottle, were constantly busy and have, like last year, raised lots of money. We now have dedicated teams that we hope will want to continue year on year!!!! Thank you to the pocket money stallholders, the marble run was great fun. We will try not to have the fair on Fathers Day next year but it was lovely to see a stall dedicated to the Dad’s alone. Thank you to the Learning Mentors and their table top games – its always lovely to see the staff taking an active part in the fair. Which brings us on to the Human Fruit Machine: this was the undoubted hit of the day, everyone has commented on the energy, enthusiasm and sparkle they all maintained the entire fair. Thanks to the maths department – can we book you again for next year!? Thanks to the team on the plant stall – they have successfully run this stall for a number of years and we will sorely miss them next. Always a joy to behold and huge money spinner, thanks must also go to those who grew the plants on in their back gardens, waging war on the squirrels and slugs. The bouncy castle was well bounced on despite the temperature of the plastic, but the fire hose was a huge hit with the sweaty mass of children! A smashing time was had by all (sorry about the pun) on the crockery smashing stall. This stall ran non-stop and huge thanks go to the organising team. Please start to collect your chipped old crockery now so we can run this again next year. Some donations were too good to smash so we sold them! Despite competition from the crockery stall the coconut shy was in great demand – especially with one child taking home 14 coconuts! This year was the best ever for the greasy pole and they only had to set it up once! All the children ask if it will be at the fair, so thanks to our strong men for continuing year after year. The ladder game was new to this year’s fair and was very addictive, it is wonderful when we have new ideas for games and stalls, thanks so much for putting in the work. The same must be said for Splat-a-Rat! Total dedication from some Y8 kids. Fabulous, difficult and also an addictive game. Play Your Cards Right was great fun despite the cards blowing in the breeze!. Thanks very much to our beat-the-goalie team, it must have been hot and exhausting, but hugely appreciated by the kids. The best place to be on the day was at the Entrance to the fair – breezy and shady but a very necessary task. We must not forget to thank those behind the scenes: the photocopying department for the programme and copying letters to parents; Dymphna, Terry and John, we could not put on such and enormous activity without their invaluable help: and finally the fantastic fund raising committee without whom there wouldn’t have a been a fair at all!!!

Summer Fair - Sunday 20 June 2004

APSA raises funds for the school.  The Summer Fair is our biggest fund raiser. See our Summer Fairs page for photos - we have just a few from 2004 (perhaps the rain affected people's cameras - please email any shots to us at info@apsanet.org.uk ).

Summer Fair - biblical rain fails to dampen spirits
ITV's Bad Girls top baddie Jim Fenner - actor Jack Ellis - opened the summer fair on Sunday 20 June at 1pm. At about 12.30pm the heavens had opened with torrential rain which led to rapid re-organisation and re-location of many of the stalls and events.

That rain!! APSA's steam barbeque

Thanks go to everyone involved in the 2004 Summer Fair but a very special thank you is due to organisers Jo Kelly and Jacky Linsey whose hard work paid off spectacularly with a great Summer Fair which raised 25% more money than last year for APSA funds. Well done to everyone but much praise to Ms Stephens and Ms Godley for organising the choir and the many staff and student bands.

Here's a selection of photographs from APS's Summer Fairs in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and 2004.

If you have any photographs you would like published here, please email them to us.
