Wednesday 25 January 2006

Main topic was food, the canteen and the new contract.
The school is in the middle of a process to appoint a new contract for school catering – specifically what food is provided in the canteen.

Parents were able to offer their opinions and contribute ideas to the meeting with the potential contractors. These were the questions we formulated at the meeting to ask the tenderers:

1. Access to drinking water in the canteen - Can clean fresh jugs made available in more locations - current arrangements unsatisfactory

2. What range of outlets will the new contractor offer, how many and where?

An APSA meeting in action

3. What marketing effort will the contractor make to attract more children to take up the food? How will they advertise the range of food and prices across the school?

4. We are keen that a range of food is made available at breaktime, especially as lunch is quite late. Break food could include savoury snacks as now, which are popular with children and parents, and perhaps some homemade cake?

5. Is it possible to have a system where students pre-order food to minimise queuing?

6. What is your policy re GM food?

7. Can you provide an imaginative range of food for vegetarians? We would like you to make the vegetarian dishes available to all children, not just non-meat-eaters, as seems to be the case now.

8. Is it feasible to introduce more 'trendy' food - eg paninis?

9. Can we offer a wider range of food, especially featuring food from a wider range of cultures? perhaps we could have 'theme days' with food from a particular cuisine eg mexican, indian..etc

10. We are strongly in favour of having a hot meal available at lunchtime - can you make the queue for them more manageable, and hence maybe increase the uptake?

11. How about offering 'meal deals' - eg soup, roll and an apple - for an all-in price?

The January meeting also agreed:

To set up an APSA webshop (contact Harriet for more details)
To establish an APSA SEN network (contact Deborah for more details – we will have a network coordinator in time.)
To market more widely the International Evening to be held on 24 February
The book campaign – to help support the school library with books, to be bought by parents through an APSA scheme
To ask the school for more information about the mobile phone mast issues – especially the contract (Stella has the details)
